Days before a pregnant woman and her baby were killed after being hit by a driver at a Regent Park intersection, residents had warned their city councillor that the busy stretch of road needed better safety measures.
With just a pedestrian crosswalk to stop traffic, Coun. Chris Moise (Toronto Centre), said community members feared someone would get hurt while trying to navigate the intersection at Queen Street East and Sackville Street. The crosswalk is a pedestrian crossover, which has overhead yellow lights and side-mounted flashers; there are no traffic signals.
