Ontario’s police watchdog said they are still investigating the wrong-way police chase on Highway 401 that resulted in four deaths in Whitby in April.
A Special Investigations Unit (SIU) release said they have collected and are reviewing a “substantial amount of evidence,” including video from in-car-camera, drone footage, body-worn camera footage, Ministry of Transportation footage and civilian recordings.
Dozens of interviews have also been conducted.
“Today marks 120 days since the start of the SIU’s investigation,” they said. “Due to the volume of evidence the unit has had to collect, process and consider, the SIU continues its work to ensure a thorough investigation is completed.”
On April 29, at least six Durham police cars sped the wrong way down Highway 401 in pursuit of a U-Haul van.
“Someone’s going to get hurt,” an unidentified OPP officer commented over the radio during the chase.
Minutes later, the van hit an oncoming Nissan Sentra and four people died — a 60-year-old man, a 55-year-old-woman, a 21-year-old man and three-month old baby boy. Three others were seriously injured in the crash — a 33-year-old man, a 27-year-old woman from the Sentra and a 38-year-old man from the cargo van.
The pursuit began after Gagandeep Singh, the 21-year-old who died, and Manpreet Gill, the 38-year-old who was seriously injured, allegedly robbed an LCBO in Bowmanville.
