Suspect sought in suspected hate-motivated arsons: Toronto police

Toronto police are looking for a suspect after signs were lit on fire in front of a synagogue and Jewish school in North York overnight Wednesday.

Police say they responded to a call for a fire in the Bayview Ave and Fifeshire Road area at 2:44 a.m.

The suspect allegedly fled the area on a motorcycle, travelling westbound on Fifeshire Road, after lighting a sign on fire in front of the synagogue.

Less than an hour later, another sign was reportedly lit on fire, this time in front of a Jewish school in the Avenue Road and Wilson Avenue area.

Officers believe the same person is responsible for both incidents in their “suspected hate-motivated mischief and arson investigation.”

The school and synagogue were not damaged by the fires, according to police.

The suspect is described by police as wearing all black clothing and riding a dark motorcycle while wearing a light motorcycle helmet.

Officers are seeking video and are asking anyone with footage or information about the suspect to contact police at 416-808-3500 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-8477.
