Those reusable bags aren’t actually recyclable in Ontario. Here’s why and what you can do with them instead

You probably have a pile in your closet — the laminated or clothlike, plastic reusable bags often sold at the checkout of big-box retailers when you want to be environmentally-conscious. But, even if the label says it’s recyclable, the bags can’t go into the blue box when you’re spring cleaning.

The bags, often made out of polypropylene — a type of plastic — are often made of composite plastics that can’t be separated easily. That could change in the future, as the province continues to overhaul its recycling program, but for now, you either have to keep your recyclable bags or donate them.
