Toronto gears up to expand its bike lane network amid growing backlash

The Crooked Cue in Etobicoke is a gathering place for residents opposed to the bike lanes that went in late last year.

“Never in my life have I seen something create such a backlash and an uproar,” said owner Sam Pappas, who, like many other local business owners, thinks the lanes are ugly, and make it difficult for local customers and those outside the neighbourhood to visit.

David Shellnutt, a cycling advocate and lawyer representing two cyclists injured after they were intentionally hit by drivers, issued a call-out to followers on X after a meeting in February to discuss bike lanes. He wanted Coun. Stephen Holyday, who organized the event, to apologize for a speaker’s comment about running over cyclists. The post was later edited and that sentence was removed.
