Toronto metropolitan population hits seven million thanks to immigration

There are now more than seven million people living in Toronto and the surrounding region, after another year of record growth largely driven by temporary residents and new immigrants moving to the area.

According to a Thursday report from Statistics Canada, nearly 270,000 people moved to the Toronto census metropolitan area (CMA) between July 1, 2023 and July 1, 2024, bringing the region’s total population to 7.1 million people. This marks a 3.9 per cent growth over the 2023 population of 6.8 million people — which itself was the result of a then-record year of growth.
