Toronto’s Ronald McDonald House school marks 20 years of giving ailing children a place to learn

For principal Katie Doering, the school at the Ronald McDonald House in Toronto has come a long way the past 20 years from when it started out in a small closet and bedroom.

Doering helped initiate the program when she recognized that children with serious illnesses were being left behind in education. Nowadays, the Ronald McDonald House Charity (RMHC) Toronto school is a private school, recognized by the Ministry of Education, for patients and siblings of patients who are staying at the Ronald McDonald House in downtown Toronto. The school operates out of its own classroom at the house and has two teachers and a tutor.
