The TTC will end free public Wi-Fi in Toronto’s subway stations on Dec. 27, a move the transit agency said is necessary due to low usage and rising costs but one that has also been criticized for making it more difficult for low-income riders to access the internet.
In a statement Friday, the transit agency said that TConnect, the free Wi-Fi system that launched over a decade ago, faces poor performance, cybersecurity concerns, a decreasing number of users and mounting costs as the rollout of Rogers’ 5G cell coverage continues across the subway network.
